James Paul Lucas Collection of Vintage photos on display in South Gallery of the Lucas mansion. 1912-1946
As part of our 40th Anniversary Exhibits, and on Display through May 2022 in the West Gallery are photos discovered and shared with the Center by the family of James Paul Lucas. These vintage photos show more about Diamond Jim and reinforce the fact that he was a collector of “curiosities”. Diamond Jim traveled the world trading diamonds and gems to the rich and famous. When Mr. Lucas passed in 1952, his belongings were, unfortunately, auctioned off. Following are three of the sixteen photos which are on display in the South Gallery. The Lucas estate inventory boasted of stirrups belonging to Buffalo Bill, a sombrero belonging to Poncho Villa of Mexico City, firearms, buffalo horns, and lots of clocks and trunks among many other collectibles. Perhaps some of these items are pictured in these vintage photos! Plan a visit to the Art Gallery to view the rest of the collection and how the Lucas Mansion appeared back in the early 1900’s when James Paul Lucas, (Diamond Jim) lived here.
